The American brand HP has significantly strengthened its positions compared to the last year, during which they presented only one ultrabook. HP Folio 13 was not the best model released in the history of the company.
It is a thick oversized specimen which is classified as a business model. The ultrabook has such dimensions because of its fairly good and capacious battery. It provides continuous operation during a full working day, which is 9 hours. It was not a very popular model, because by that time the competitors, such as Acer, Lenovo, Samsung, had already introduced more compact and convenient models.
HP Envy 14 Spectre
But the manufacturer decided not to give up and continued to work towards better ultrabooks. And a year later at the HP Influence Summit 2012 they presented the device called Spectre 14. It should be noted that the American brand managed to very quickly switch from a very large and apparently not a very attractive model to an interesting (as far as design is concerned) and usable product.
New ultrabook was equipped with a 14-inch screen, encased in a thin glass bezel which makes the size of the device no bigger than that of a 13-inch model. The body of the Spectre 14 is made entirely of glass, which results in the use of expensive materials in the model. This makes it a high-status device and, consequently, the price of the unit is high.
On the summit they also mentioned the future manufacturing of the product. Introduction of five new models based on an Intel Ivy Bridge hardware platform was announced. They will be equipped with a variety of screens, among which the most popular are 13, 14, and 15.6 inches.
The manufacturer also does not forget about the graphics, the largest models will feature the latest-generation discrete graphics adapter by AMD. Yet, the models from this manufacturer are becoming quite expensive, which makes the appearance of many of them on the USA market very doubtful. The model range is expanding significantly, thus becoming highly controversial and blurred. Let’s have a closer look at a few devices to investigate the existing situation thoroughly.
HP Envy Spectre XT
The company places high expectations on the sale of this model on the european markets. Despite the relatively low price (comparatively to an American consumer), this device is worth buying. If you look at the appearance and dimensions of the model, you will see a pretty good combination of characteristics of both models: Folio 13 and Spectre 14.
From the former (which was not very successful) they took the capacious battery and the design of the lid that looks like as if it is made of polished aluminum. From the latter (a quite expensive model) they took the nice “glassy” design and the thin bezel of the screen.
Thus, one gets an impression that the ultrabook is one inch less in size, though in fact it is not. Somehow the Americans can combine an affordable price with compact design and capacious battery in one unit.
The hardware characteristics of the device, as in any computer of the second class, are average, but still they are well suitable for office work. 4 GB of RAM, 256 GB of SSD. With competing companies, such as Lenovo, Acer, Samsung, things are in a much worse way.
HP Elitebook Folio 9470p
According to the opinion of many customers and employees of Hewlett-Packard, this is the most important product in 2012 production line. Its concepts are really frightening to the competitors, especially Lenovo with their highlight – ThinkPad T430u ultrabook. Introduction of the HP Folio 9470p to the market is scheduled for September, which is rather late. The other four models will appear in June.
Now we are going to move from the financial part to the fitting of the model. What is so unique about this machine that does not exist in any other? Well, there are all the possible ports and connectors that can be found in any desktop computer.
Here are the most important of them: several USB-connectors, Ethernet, VGA, SmartCard. And all this is placed in the case that is not more than 18 mm thick. There is also a removable battery with the ability to connect an external one, which is really useful during a long trip because it makes the ultrabook a very handy and multifunction device rather than an unnecessary piece of plastic.
